During the World War II era and continuing through the 1940s, young male adults in the United States were scarce.

The world of dating in America has changed dramatically over the last century.

Some may argue that in today's society, it is nonexistent and has been replaced by what many young people refer to as "hooking up." With the advent of new technologies (e.g., cell phones, instant messaging, video chatting, etc.) and the changing definitions of traditional dating and families, "dating" has become a more open and self-interpreted institution over the century.

I've decided to organize the statistics and facts into two main areas.

The first which starts on this page will deal with the general online dating industry as a whole.

Women would only accept date invitations from men with money and gifts and tried to refrain from being seen with the same boy too often.

The dating scene among college students was very competitive: in the first half of the twentieth century, American universities were overwhelminingly populated by men, who sometimes had to fight for dates with the most desired female students.

For this reason, the history of dating tends to be quite different for the LGBT population.

In the first decade of the twentieth century, men "called upon" young women whom they fancied by (with the permission of her parents) visiting her home.

Now with their own modes of transportation and much more freedom, young people began going out to restaurants or to the cinema to have fun, instead of having lengthy discussions with the woman's parents.

During the 1920s and 1930s, dating became a system of ratings.

In the contents below you will find them divided up accordingly. This is an ongoing project that I plan to add to regularly.
